How B2B buyers are making decisions in 2026
If you’re planning your B2B marketing strategy for 2026, understanding how buyers make purchasing decisions has never been more important.
B2B marketing has changed. Not dramatically on the surface, but deep down smart B2B marketing is shifting because of how business purchasing decisions are being made.
Buyers are still researching, comparing and shortlisting suppliers. But what’s driving those decisions has shifted. It’s no longer about who shows up the most – it’s now about who builds the most confidence and trust.
To better understand what’s really influencing B2B purchasing behaviour, we at Prime Creative Media surveyed 856 decision makers across nine industries.
These people are engaged readers across our network of publications, and the results are clear: B2B buying in 2026 is driven by trust, proof and consistent exposure.
Here’s what marketers need to understand:
Trust is the filter every decision passes through
Buyers don’t just evaluate products. They’re also evaluating the credibility of the brand, and the marketing decisions you make contribute to this.
Our research showed that:
- Trade media is the most trusted source of information
- Peer recommendations are the most influential factor in supplier selection
- Social media and online advertising on platforms like Google and Meta rank lowest for both trust and influence
This reinforces a critical point: where your message appears shapes how believable it is.
If your brand is only visible in low-trust environments, you’re starting at a disadvantage, regardless of how strong your offering is.
B2B buyers want proof, not promotion
One of the clearest findings from the research is that buyers are actively seeking validation – especially from fellow customers and users like themselves.
Our survey respondents told us:
- 57% use trade media to learn from case studies
- 46% use it to identify new suppliers
- 27% use it to support purchasing decisions
This tells us that B2B buyers are not looking for slick slogans – they’re looking for evidence around product performance.
Case studies, expert commentary and real-world success stories consistently outperform sales-led content because they help buyers answer a critical question: “Can I justify this decision internally?”
Trade media plays a central role in shortlisting
B2B buyers rely on multiple channels when researching suppliers, but trade media consistently sits at the centre of that process.
By the time a buyer reaches out to a supplier, they have often already formed a shortlist – and trade media has helped shape it.
Events further extend this influence, providing opportunities for:
- Face-to-face validation
- Peer interaction
- Deeper engagement with suppliers
Together, media and events create a powerful ecosystem for building trust and accelerating decisions.
Engagement is frequent and habitual
One of the most important findings is how often buyers engage with industry media:
- Nearly half engage daily or several times per week
- A further 22% engage weekly
This isn’t occasional consumption – it’s a part of buyers’ weekly professional routines.
And when buyers are engaging regularly, marketers can move beyond one-off messages, and instead, build a compelling narrative over time.
Consistent presence allows you to:
- Reinforce key messages
- Build familiarity
- Demonstrate credibility
- Stay top of mind throughout the buying cycle
Trust isn’t built in a single campaign. It’s built through repeated, credible exposure.
One strategy does not fit all industries
While the role of trust and proof is consistent, how you execute your marketing should vary by sector.
Buyers in high-capex industries, like manufacturing and infrastructure, told us they want deep technical content and detailed case studies.
In SME-heavy sectors, such as agriculture and transport, buyers respond to familiarity, consistency and peer-led stories.
Heavily regulated sectors like medical and wealth management prioritise education, expertise and credibility over promotion.
Understanding the buyer mindset in your specific industry is key to getting the approach right.
The bottom line for B2B marketers
The findings point to a simple but important shift: B2B marketing is no longer about being seen, it’s about being trusted.
The brands that win in 2026 will be the ones that:
- Show up in credible environments
- Provide proof, not just messaging
- Invest in depth over volume
- Maintain a consistent presence over time
Because when buyers are ready to act, they don’t choose the brand they saw once.
They choose the brand they’ve seen repeatedly over an extended period – the brand that has built a position of trust with them.
